A Practical SEO Checklist for Business Websites

SEO can feel complicated, but most business websites gain the most from getting a handful of fundamentals right. Use this checklist to review your own site.

Technical foundations

  • Your site loads quickly on mobile and passes Core Web Vitals.
  • Every important page is indexable and included in your XML sitemap.
  • The site uses HTTPS and has no broken internal links.
  • Each page has one clear canonical URL.

On-page optimisation

  • Every page has a unique, descriptive title tag and meta description.
  • Each page targets a clear topic and uses one H1 heading.
  • Content answers the questions your customers actually ask.
  • Images have descriptive alt text and are compressed.
  • Pages link to related services and articles.

Local SEO

If you serve customers in specific locations, local SEO is often the fastest win. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile, keep your name, address and phone number consistent across the web, and encourage genuine customer reviews.

Content that earns visibility

Search engines reward pages that are genuinely helpful. Create dedicated pages for each core service, and publish articles that answer real questions from your sales conversations. Quality and relevance matter far more than volume.

Measure and improve

Connect Google Search Console and Google Analytics. Review which queries bring impressions but few clicks, and improve those titles and pages first. SEO is a compounding investment — small, consistent improvements add up.
